Mississippi Ave District Guide
A Walk Through One of North Portland’s Most Spirited Streets

There is a stretch of North Portland that has its own particular rhythm. N Mississippi Avenue runs through the Boise-Eliot neighborhood, and if you give it an afternoon, it tends to hold onto you longer than expected.
The street is lined with locally owned shops, music venues, food carts, and restaurants that feel like they grew out of the neighborhood rather than were placed there. Many sit inside historic Craftsman-style buildings, which gives the whole corridor a grounded character that newer commercial strips rarely have.
It pairs naturally with a visit to nearby N Williams Avenue, just a few blocks east, which shares a similar energy and a strong local dining scene.
What the Mississippi District Is Known For
The heart of the neighborhood runs along N Mississippi Avenue from roughly N Fremont Street up to N Skidmore Street. That stretch holds most of the shops, restaurants, and gathering spots that define the district.
Mississippi Studios anchors the cultural life of the street. The venue was formerly a Baptist church and has since become one of the city’s most intimate live music spaces. On any given night, local and national acts play here in a room that still feels personal.
Unlike some commercial corridors that have softened over time, Mississippi still holds a creative, slightly independent spirit. Record stores, plant shops, comedy venues, and bookstores share space with restaurants and breweries. It rewards wandering.
Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Local Favorites
A few places worth building your visit around:
Prost! A German-style beer garden and pub that has become a neighborhood institution. The patio fills up fast on warm evenings.
Prost Marketplace One of the better food cart pods on the street, with rotating vendors and a casual, graze-as-you-go feel.
Gravy A neighborhood brunch staple near the north end of the street. The biscuits and signature gravy draw a loyal crowd on weekend mornings, with a vegetarian option available.
Por Que No? A Mississippi anchor for years. The tacos are consistently good and yes, the line is real. Go early for dinner. It is worth it.
Mississippi Studios Bar Bar The companion bar next door to the music venue. A sprawling patio, solid burgers, and a relaxed spot before or after a show.
Parks and Green Spaces Nearby
Overlook Park sits just north of the main strip and offers a view of the downtown Portland skyline alongside walking paths and a dog off-leash area. The sunset view from here is one of the better ones in North Portland.
Peninsula Park, a short distance north, is worth the trip in late spring when the rose garden is in bloom. It also has a public pool and open lawn space for spreading out on a sunny afternoon.
If you want to keep exploring, Laurelhurst Park in Northeast Portland and Forest Park along the west hills offer two very different but equally rewarding outdoor experiences.
Exploring the Neighborhood
Start at the corner of N Mississippi Avenue and N Fremont Street and walk north. Give yourself time to slow down.
Notice the buildings as much as the businesses. The mix of converted bungalows and old storefronts tells you how this street developed over time. Look for Pistils Nursery, where the greenhouse spills onto the sidewalk, and Mississippi Records on N Albina, a shop specializing in jazz, blues, and soul with the kind of curation you only find when someone genuinely cares.
Mississippi is not trying to impress anyone. It is a working neighborhood street that happens to have great food, live music most nights, and enough interesting stops to fill an afternoon without any advance planning.
Spend a few hours here and it starts to feel less like somewhere you are visiting and more like somewhere you want to come back to.
